CAPLAB: Exploring Culture and Performance through experimentation

Introducing Our latest collaboration with Professors Maria Guadalupe at INSEAD and Florian Englmaier at LMU MUnich

Performance management doesn’t come cheap, costing up to $35 million per 10,000 employees according to Gallup. It drains a significant amount of time, reportedly taking two million management hours every year before an overhaul at Deloitte. Given the price, it’s easy to think that there is plenty of evidence out there on how to create a fair and motivating performance management system in organisations. However, meta-analytic evidence suggests that there is a lot of room for error, especially when it comes to the culture around why and how our performance gets measured.

Together with The CAPLAB, we’re here to change that with groundbreaking academic research. We call for organisational partners to join our collaboration and develop cutting-edge methods to drive performance by taking culture into the equation.

“Experimenting with performance and culture is bold. Organisations who use data to better themselves are pioneers. The reward is that they will make better decisions.”

Professor Maria Guadalupe, INSEAD

The Research THEMES

Data discovery

  • What elements of culture drive performance?

  • How do the current performance management processes influence sentiment and objective performance metrics?

  • How do these cultural drivers differ by demographic characteristics and how do we address them? How do we successfully identify the best way to create a high performance culture?

Driving performance through culture

  • What are the optimal interventions to drive performance through culture?

  • How can we create small day-to-day behaviour changes that drive motivation and performance?

The EXPERIMENTAL Methodology

MoreThanNow are pioneers of experimental research in large, corporate organisations, specifically drawing on a method of evaluation called the randomised controlled trial (RCT). The CAPLAB aims to evaluate the cultural drivers of performance using this approach, analysing the components of your employees’ motivation and optimising the structures that help them excel. In this way, we can solve organisational challenges while building our understanding of how to create cultures that nurture high performance.

“We often overlook the people behind the numbers. It’s time to create motivation and drive performance through bettering organisational culture.”

Zsofia Belovai, Senior Behavioural Scientist at MoreThanNow
